Located at the foot of Mt Kenya at 6,500ft Borana Conservancy provides a unique and diverse habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. In 2013, a founding population of 21 Black Rhino were introduced. Once they were settled, Borana and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy were integrated to form one landscape; 92,000 acres of unspoilt wilderness. The largest contiguous black rhino habitat in East Africa. Together with Lewa, we now host a thriving community of 87 Black Rhino and 79 White Rhino. Borana Lodge is the original property on Borana Conservancy with eight thatched cottages each in built from local and sustainable resources in their own unique style. Visiting Borana Lodge not only directly benefits local livelihoods and enhances ecosystem integrity, it also funds all core operating costs - all retained earnings from Borana Lodge are directly invested in conservation. This includes the recurrent training and support of over 100 wildlife rangers who protect and monitor over nine highly endangered species. As well as being a conservation area, Borana is home to the largest permaculture projects in East Africa. Nestled on the eastern bank of the Ngare Ndare River sits Kabati Regenerative Farm, 440 acres of Riverine Forest, Acacia Savannah and a 100 acres of arable land. This farm provides the entire conservancy with fresh, organic, slow food which is not only good for one's health but also good for the soul.
