Just above the entrance to the Fortress of Shali is the old mosque with its distinctive chimney-shaped minaret. The mosque was recently restored and a pathway leads from the central square to the doorway. The recently restored mosque survives today as the oldest monument built in Shali, as well as the oldest mosque in the world built with kershef, a mixture of mud and salt.
