‘SEAL ISLAND’ CRUISES, Hout Bay Circe Launches has been in operation since 1973.  The Company began with two converted, World War II, Air Sea Rescue Crafts, the Circe and the R9, and were the only operators running cruises to the Cape Fur Seal colony at Duiker Island, Hout Bay. In 2001, the Company launched their new vessel, m.v. Calypso, to run the ‘Seal Island’ Cruises.  She is the only glass bottomed passenger launch in South Africa.  Calypso has 2 x 1m viewing ports, built into the bottom of her hull where her passengers are able, during good visibility, to see the sea life underwater as well as close up on the Island, in their natural habitat. Calypso was built by the owner, with Marine Architects, with safety and comfort of passengers being the priority.  Her powerful engines enable our experienced and professional crew to bring the vessel within meters of the seals on the Island, without interfering with them. During good visibility, our passengers are able to get a first hand view of the kelp forests and abundant sea life, underwater at Duiker Island. Her powerful engines enable our professional crew to bring the vessel within metres of the island, for really close up views of the Cape Fur Seals in their natural environment. Circe Launches run daily cruises, weather and sea conditions permitting, to the Seal Colony. Booking is necessary.
