The Water Clock or clepsydra was a weight-driven clock was completed in 1357 as part of the Medersa Bou Inania. The wooden beams held brass bowls into which water would pour. It housed a very important man: the muwaqqit, in charge of regulating clocks so correct prayer times could be given to the muezzin (mosque official who calls the faithful to prayer). There were similar ingenious clocks across the medieval Arab world, including another in Fez, at Dar Muwaqqit at the Kairaouine Mosque.
